Walt Disney World in Orlando has seen such a huge demand for popular rides throughout its 4 theme parks that earlier in 2019, Disney implemented a new tier system for FastPasses. The old system allowed you to reserve a time at up to 3 rides or experiences per day prior to your trip that basically allowed you to skip the line. You can set up FastPasses 60 days prior to the start of your trip if you are staying at a Disney resort or 30 days prior if you are staying off property.
At the Magic Kingdom, FastPasses still work as they used to – choose any 3 rides/experiences of your choice. But, if you’re visiting Animal Kingdom, Hollywood Studios, or Epcot, you need to know about the tier system. The tier system still allows a total of 3 rides/experiences per day but Disney has grouped rides into tiers. The most popular rides are Tier 1, and you can only choose one Tier 1 ride. When making your FastPass selections, be sure to do this first! After choosing your Tier 1 ride, you will be able to choose two rides/experiences from Tier 2. If you are not interested in any of the Tier 1 rides, you can choose 3 rides from Tier 2 without running into problems.
Still confused? Let’s look at Hollywood Studios.
Their Tier 1 rides are:
- Slinky Dog Dash
- Alien Swirling Saucers
- Toy Story Mania
- Rockin’ Roller Coaster
- Tower of Terror
The old system would have allowed you to choose any 3 of these rides as your FastPass selections for the day (assuming availability), but now you can only reserve a FastPass for 1 of these. Our pick would be Slinky Dog Dash, if available, as it is still the most popular ride, and if you get to the park early, you can probably do several of these others without wasting your whole day in line.
After you’ve chosen from Tier 1, select your Tier 2 rides/experiences from the following:
- Star Tours
- Voyage of the Little Mermaid
- Indiana Jones’ Stunt Spectacular
- Disney Junior Dance Party
- Muppet Vision 3D
- Beauty and Beast
- Frozen Sing-A-Long Celebration
